Don’t Take a Vacation from Your Daily Dental Routine!

There’s nothing like a summer vacation to help you relax and unwind, but don’t think you can take a break from good oral hygiene! It can be easy to forget to keep up your regular habits when you’re away from your normal daily grind, but even away from home you need to be constantly vigilant about tooth decay and gum disease. Here are 6 tips for maintaining an excellent dental routine during the summer.

1. Always Have Plenty of Supplies on Hand

You should always have a well-stocked dental kit when you’re on the go. Buy plenty of travel-sized toothpastes, mouthwashes and dental floss, and always have an extra toothbrush on hand.

2. Take Care of Your toothbrush

While a travel case for your toothbrush might seem like it makes sense, keeping the bristles in a dark, enclosed, moist environment could be encouraging bacterial growth – especially if you put the brush away while it was still wet. Skip the case and always take your brush out when you reach your destination; let it dry in the open air by standing it in a cup.

3. Watch What You’re Drinking

Sugary drinks like soda might be refreshing during those hot summer days, but they also encourage the development of tooth decay. Water is all-around the healthier alternative; not only is it better at keeping you hydrated, but it can also help wash away harmful bacteria and acids. If you do end up indulging in some not-so-tooth-friendly beverages, use a straw so that less of the liquid touches the teeth.

4. Keep Brushing and Flossing Twice a Day

No matter how much you sleep in or how late you return to your hotel room, you should always be brushing and flossing at least two times a day – ideally once in the morning and once in the evening. If you have the opportunity, you might brush after lunch as well.

5. Be Careful with Ice

Putting a block of ice in your mouth can help you cool down, but be careful not to chew; hard substances can potentially damage the teeth. You don’t want a dental emergency to interrupt your vacation.

6. Have a Checkup Before You Leave

Good oral care is all about prevention; ideally, tooth decay and gum disease should be identified and treated in their absolute earliest stages. To that end, it’s a good idea to visit your dentist right before you leave on vacation. This way, you can make sure any potential problems are addressed before leaving town.

An appointment is also a good opportunity to ask your dentist about any other summer care tips they might have. Keep your smile safe while you’re having fun in the sun!
