Is the Mercury in Metal Fillings Enough Reason to Replace Them?

June 22, 2026

Person with amalgam fillings

In the past, the only dental fillings that were available were amalgam. This material is strong and sturdy, but it often sticks out because of its shiny appearance. That said, as more research comes out, the mercury in it may be a problem for some patients. That said, is that enough reason to replace it with its tooth-colored counterpart? Here is what you should know.

What Are Metal or Amalgam Fillings?

As a quick refresher, amalgam fillings are restorations that are made of a metal alloy. Half of it was typically gold, silver, or tin, while the rest was made of mercury. The latter was used as a binding agent that helped make it more malleable. It allowed your dentist to manipulate and shape it to your tooth. Once in place, results often lasted for up to 15 years or longer when properly taken care of.

Are Metal Fillings Really That Bad?

Over time, research has come out and shown that mercury can be toxic to the body in high amounts. If you have a metal filling, then you might imagine it’s bad news, but a single restoration or two isn’t typically trouble for most people. That said, it does release a vapor that can be an issue for some patients, such as:

  • Children six years old and younger
  • Pregnant or nursing people
  • Naturally have a higher sensitivity to mercury
  • Those with pre-existing neurological disorders
  • Struggle with impaired kidney function

So, Should I Replace My Amalgam Filling?

In the end, replacing amalgam fillings is simply up to you. If you do fall into any of the categories above, then it doesn’t hurt to talk to your dentist about what they recommend and to your physician to see whether the mercury in it is causing trouble for your overall health. Even if you don’t, it doesn’t hurt to inquire about the tooth-colored counterpart.

For instance, you may feel less discomfort when switching from hot and cold foods and drinks. Metal expands and shrinks with temperature changes, but the modern version doesn’t do this. As well, it will blend in more seamlessly with your smile, so you won’t need to worry about its appearance. Keep everything above in mind while you talk with your provider; that way, you make a confident choice for your grin.
