Here are some of the most common factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Tobacco use<\/strong> \u2013 It doesn\u2019t matter whether you smoke or chew it; about 90% of people with oral cancer are tobacco users.<\/li><li><strong>Heavy alcohol consumption<\/strong> \u2013 People who drink excessively are more likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer, especially if they\u2019re also smokers.<\/li><li><strong>Sun exposure<\/strong> \u2013 Too much sun on the lips can increase the risk of cancer.<\/li><li><strong>Human Papillomavirus (HPV)<\/strong> \u2013 Oral cancer that is linked to HPV is usually found on the base of the tongue or at the back of the throat.<\/li><li><strong>Being older than 45<\/strong> \u2013 People of any age can develop oral cancer, but the risk greatly increases after a person turns 45.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs of Oral Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The symptoms of oral cancer can vary from person to person, but some are more common than others. Call your dentist immediately if you notice any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sores in the mouth that won\u2019t heal<\/li><li>White or red patches in the mouth<\/li><li>Difficulty chewing or swallowing<\/li><li>A persistent feeling that something is stuck in the throat<\/li><li>Swelling in the neck<\/li><li>Unexplained, dramatic weight loss<\/li><li>Constant bad breath or bad taste in the mouth<\/li><li>Difficulty moving the tongue or jaw<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How You Can Reduce Your Risk of Oral Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that mouth cancers are fairly preventable. Some of the ways that you can avoid oral cancer include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Quit tobacco<\/li><li>Cut back on alcohol consumption<\/li><li>Brush and floss daily<\/li><li>Eat a balanced diet<\/li><li>Limit sun exposure<\/li><li>Use an SPF lip balm when you must spend time outside<\/li><li>If you wear dentures, remove them at night and clean them every day<\/li><li>See your dentist at least twice a year<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral cancer in Cocoa Beach can be fatal, but by taking the proper precautions, you can minimize your risk.
