Believe it or not, they have holiday wishes too \u2013\nmainly that your teeth and gums stay in good condition. That can be hard this\ntime of year, what with all the sweet treats readily available. Here are a few\ntips to honor your dentist\u2019s wish list and stay cavity-free this holiday\nseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Eat Your Sweets with Your Meals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s common to wait a while after eating to enjoy\ndessert, this is actually detrimental to your oral health. Enjoy your sweets\nduring or shortly after mealtime. This is because your mouth produces more\nsaliva while you eat meals. It might sound gross, but you actually want more saliva,\nnot less. Saliva helps wash away leftover food particles that could cause\ncavities and gum disease. It also neutralizes the acids created by bacteria in\nyour mouth and strengthens your teeth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Stay Away from Sticky Foods <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people eat dried fruit when they\u2019re trying to be\nhealthy. Dried fruit, however, is pretty sticky. Sticky foods tend to stay on\nthe teeth longer than other kinds of food. When it comes to developing\ncavities, the amount of sugar you eat generally doesn\u2019t matter as much as how\nlong that sugar remains on your teeth. If you find yourself eating a lot of\ndried fruit like cranberries, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water or\nbrush your teeth afterwards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Limit Your Alcohol Intake <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alcohol reduces the amount of saliva you have, causing dry\nmouth. This can increase your risk for tooth decay and gum disease (as well as\nhangovers!). A good rule of thumb is to have one glass of water for every alcoholic\ndrink you consume to offset dry mouth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Go Easy on Hard Candies <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides being chock full of sugar, hard candies also run the\nrisk of chipping or breaking your teeth if you chew on them. Be careful not to\nchip or break your teeth trying to crack nuts as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Watch Out for Starchy Foods <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starchy foods like bread, pasta, and potato chips are sneaky\nbecause we don\u2019t often think of them as being bad for our teeth. You know how\nwhen you eat sugary foods, bacteria in your mouth create acid that erode the\ntooth enamel, causing cavities? The exact same thing happens when you eat starches.\nBe sure to brush and floss after eating them to remove any plaque that might\nbuild up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following these tips to stay cavity-free is the best way to\nfulfill your dentist\u2019s holiday wish list.
