But,\nunfortunately, no medical procedure (including implants) is risk-free. While\nrelatively rare, dental implant infections can lead to implant failure and damage\nthe surrounding jawbone. But, with a few preventative measures and the right\ncare and maintenance, you can greatly reduce your risk of infection. Keep\nreading to learn about the symptoms to watch for, how an infection is treated,\nand how you can avoid one altogether. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Signs of Implant Infection? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting an implant involves a small, in-office surgery. With\nany surgery, no matter how minor, there\u2019s always a risk of infection. Here are\ncommon symptoms to be aware of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Inflammation (e.g. red, tender, swollen, or\nbleeding gums) <\/li><li>Moderate or severe pain or discomfort when\nchewing<\/li><li>A loose implant<\/li><li>Receding gums around the implant<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is an Infection Treated?&nbsp; <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, or if\nsomething just doesn\u2019t feel right with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocoabeachdentist.com\/dental-implants.html\">dental implants<\/a>,\nlet your dentist know right away. The earlier problems are found and treated,\nthe better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment may include any combination of the following: a\nprescription-strength anti-bacterial mouth rinse, antibiotics, surgery, a\nspecial type of professional cleaning, or laser treatment. After evaluating the\ninfection, a dentist will create the best treatment plan to minimize the risk\nof implant failure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Prevent Infection?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce the\nrisk of infection, right from the start:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If applicable, stop smoking before the\nprocedure. <\/li><li>Closely follow your post-operative instructions from\nyour dentist or surgeon. <\/li><li>After the first two days have passed after your\nsurgery, gently rinse your mouth out with salt water several times a day. This\nis a safe, gentle, and effective way to kill bacteria and promote healing. <\/li><li>It\u2019s very important to keep the area clean with\nbrushing and flossing, but do so gently and carefully. <\/li><li>For the first two weeks or so after your\nsurgery, minimize or avoid hard, crunchy foods. Instead, focus on soft foods\nsuch as yogurt, soups, bananas, smoothies, cottage cheese, guacamole, scrambled\neggs, oatmeal, applesauce, mashed potatoes, etc. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, for long-term maintenance, be sure to continue coming in for regular checkups and doing well with brushing and flossing. With implants (and your oral health in general) a little prevention will go a long way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risks of dental implants are low and the benefits are\nhigh.
