That\u2019s almost double in just a decade! While it\u2019s true that good oral hygiene and regular checkups can prevent many emergencies, unfortunately, it can\u2019t prevent them all. So if you have a dental emergency, who should you call &#8211; the dentist or the ER? Keep reading below to find out and get some great tips for the most common emergencies! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Should You Go To the Hospital?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some circumstances that require medical treatment first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If your jaw is potentially fractured or dislocated.<\/li><li>If you have heavy bleeding that doesn\u2019t subside after applying pressure for 15 minutes. <\/li><li>If you have severe swelling or an abscess, there\u2019s a good chance you have a serious infection that can become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2015\/06\/29\/er-dental-visits\/29492599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very dangerous<\/a> if it travels to other areas of the body. <\/li><li>If you have any serious facial lacerations. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all of these situations, you can call a dentist after you\u2019ve been medically stabilized for any restorative work that may need to be done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips For the Most Common Dental Emergencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For emergencies other than the ones mentioned above, start\nby calling a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocoabeachdentist.com\/emergency-dentistry.html\">dentist who\nprovides emergency care<\/a>. They can give you specific advice for your\nsituation and schedule you for the first available appointment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how to deal with less severe injuries that don\u2019t require a visit to the ER:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Chipped, Cracked or Broken tooth<\/strong> &#8211; Start by rinsing out your mouth with lukewarm water. If you\u2019re in pain, you can apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek and take over-the-counter pain medication. You can also use dental wax from the store to cover any sharp edges. <\/li><li><strong>Knocked-Out Tooth<\/strong> \u2013 If you\u2019ve knocked out a tooth, it\u2019s important to act fast. You\u2019ll have the best chance of saving your tooth if you can be seen within one hour. After calling a dentist, gently rinse the tooth off (holding it only by the crown, not the root) and place it back in its socket, facing the right way. If this isn\u2019t possible, put the tooth in a glass of milk or water, or hold it in your cheek pouch. It\u2019s crucial that the tooth stays clean and moist!<\/li><li><strong>A Toothache Without Severe Swelling <\/strong>\u2013 This could be due to a number of issues, so call your dentist to schedule an appointment and take an over-the-counter pain medication as directed. <\/li><li><strong>Dental Crown Comes Off <\/strong>\u2013 Crowns usually come off while eating, so try not to swallow it. Then, put it in a small plastic sandwich bag and call your dentist. And don\u2019t try to glue the crown back on at home with super glue or any kind of adhesive because it can make the dentist\u2019s job harder when you arrive for treatment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since you can\u2019t plan for an emergency, the best defense is\nbeing prepared.
